wall may have been built in independent sections going back to the 7th century B.C.
In the year 221 B.C, the systematic building during Shih Huang Ti rule occurred.
He was the first emperor of the Ch'in dynasty under a united China. Over 1200 miles
were completed during his rule, with the wall being completed in the year 204 B.C.
Much later during the Ming dynasty (AD 1368-1644), the Great Wall was repaired and
extended. The final fortifications were upto 2500 miles in length. The wall is constructed
of earth and stone, faced with brick in the eastern section. It measures 15-30'
in the base and tapers to 12' at the top. The height averages 25' except at the
watchtowers. The watchtowers are 40' in height and approximately 600' apart.
